EWOT (Exercise With Oxygen Therapy)

We all know that oxygen is necessary for healthy cells and that healthy cells make a happy body, happy person, happy life. The reason for this is simple because oxygen-enriched cells create energy in a more effective and efficient manner and an oxygen-enriched body is better able to fight disease and slow down the aging process. While this typically takes place fairly naturally when we are young, as we age, we begin to absorb less and less available oxygen which means our health begins to decline as the function of the cells declines.

While many consider this degeneration to be a natural process and believe that nothing can be done to change it, others resort to therapies used to increase oxygen in the body such as the hyperbaric chamber. Admittedly, the hyperbaric is an excellent form of treatment, however, at the HEALTH RESOURCE CENTER, we believe that exercise with oxygen therapy (EWOT) is a more effective and efficient way to oxygenate the body.

What exactly is EWOT?

Invented by Manfred von Ardenne, physicist, researcher, and inventor, EWOT is simply the process of exercising while breathing oxygen. Through his research, Ardenne found that stress of any kind can cause a decrease in the ability to absorb oxygen into the blood which leads to less oxygen to the tissues. EWOT increases the amount of oxygen in the blood and plasma as well as in the tissues, and this increase can reverse the degenerative process. As more oxygen makes its way to the tissues, numerous health benefits may occur and various systems in the body become stronger and more supported. The process has been used to successfully treat heart failure, high blood pressure, inflammation, pain, emphysema, stress, cancer, enlarged heart, traumatic brain injuries, autism, and much more.

What happens during an EWOT session?

In our clinic, HEALTH RESOURCE CENTER, our clients are assisted in the exercise session by a professional who has been trained on the system as well as in bodywork and peak performance. While riding on a stationary bike, the client will alternate between breathing pure oxygen and breathing depleted oxygen. An oxygen concentrator is used to provide oxygen to the client at higher concentrations than the air they can breathe. The air available to breathe contains around 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and 1% other gasses. By using the oxygen concentrator, the air in the room will pass through a molecular strainer that separates oxygen from nitrogen leaving behind a supply of 90-95% concentrated supplemental oxygen. The entire session may last anywhere from 15-25 minutes routinely moving from a steady aerobic pace to high-intensity intermittent bursts. Throughout the session a pulse oximeter is worn, by the client, to monitor the heart rate and oxygen saturation. Our experienced, caring professional will determine the best level of activity for each person!

How can EWOT support the body?

Exercise with oxygen therapy has been used to successfully treat:

  • Heart failure
  • High blood pressure
  • Emphysema
  • Stress
  • Cancer
  • Enlarged heart
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Dementia
  • Inflammation, aches, pain
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Emotional distress

Many other conditions have seen improvement through EWOT and the process can calm and support the central nervous system as well.

What To Expect or Know Before You Go

  • Wear comfortable athletic type clothing
  • Sessions last approximately 20 minutes
  • You will wear a mask connected to an oxygen concentrator and exercise gently on a stationary bike
  • Depending on your degree of fitness or illness, the therapist will determine the safest level of movement or therapy for you
